Studio Dumbar designed a brand refresh for Exact. In addition there was a desire to renew the UX and UI of Exact Online and to develop a design system to go with it.
How do you implement a new design system for an application that is being used by more than half a million entrepreneurs and consists of over hundreds of templates? The UX manager and I chose for a gradual transition.

The brand refresh introduced a new colour palette and a new typeface.
The five most used pages were used as a starting point. They contained 90% of all components in Exact Online. I introduced the MVDL: Minimum Viable Design Language that formed the base for the Exact Design System (EDS).
Design Roulette helped the team to design a lot of variations in a short amount of time.
Typefaces and colours were defined earlier and the EDS-team translated that on to a screen. In the first sprint, the focus was on interaction and key values. Design Roulette helped the team to design a lot of variations in a short amount of time. Exact Online is a complex product with loads of options so most of the time was spent on the navigational patterns. The focus was on efficiency and consistency.
In 5 sprints I developed the Design System. At the end of each sprint I involved the user to gradually get to a new design language. In total more than 60 users were involved in qualitative research during the development of the Exact Design System.

The MVDL was the starting point for the Exact Design System.
Together with the new framework different teams(developers as well as designers) within Exact Online make use of the same component library.
